What is social media marketing? A practical guide for brands

Social media marketing is using platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and X to build awareness, start conversations and win customers. It includes free (organic) activity, like posting and replying, and paid activity, like running ads in Meta Ads Manager or LinkedIn Ads.
SMO vs SMM
You will often see two terms. SMO (social media optimisation) usually means improving profiles and organic content so they are discovered and shared. SMM (social media marketing) is the broader job, including paid campaigns, influencer work and measurement. In practice, most businesses need both.
Choosing the right platforms
- Instagram: visual products, food, fashion, beauty, travel, education and personal brands. Short videos (reels) drive much of the reach.
- Facebook: broad reach across age groups, community groups, local businesses and lead generation ads.
- YouTube: tutorials, reviews, explainers and long-term discoverability through search.
- LinkedIn: B2B services, hiring, professional reputation and decision makers.
- X: news, opinions, events and real-time customer service.
It is better to do one or two platforms well than five badly. Start where your audience already spends time.
A simple social media plan
1. Set a goal
Awareness, website visits, enquiries, sales or customer support. The goal decides what you post and what you measure.
2. Know your audience
Who are they, what problems do they have and what do they enjoy watching? Look at the questions customers ask you every day.
3. Pick three to five content pillars
For example, a bakery might choose: behind the scenes, new products, customer moments, baking tips and offers. Pillars keep content varied without running out of ideas.
4. Plan a calendar
Decide how often you can post consistently. Consistency matters more than volume.
5. Make content that is native to each platform
Vertical video for reels and Shorts, carousels for step-by-step tips, professional insights for LinkedIn. A phone and free editing apps are enough.
6. Engage
Reply to comments and messages quickly. Social media is a conversation, and replies often turn followers into customers.
7. Add paid promotion carefully
Boost posts that already perform well, or run targeted campaigns with clear objectives and tracking. Small, well-targeted budgets often beat large unfocused ones.
8. Measure and adjust
Look beyond likes. Track saves, shares, profile visits, website clicks, enquiries and sales, then do more of what works.
Common mistakes
- Posting only offers and adverts.
- Copying trends that do not fit the brand.
- Buying followers, which damages reach and trust.
- Ignoring comments and negative feedback.
- Judging success only by follower count.
