What is lead generation? Building a system that brings enquiries

A lead is a person or company that has shown interest in what you offer and shared a way to contact them: a form submission, a phone call, a WhatsApp message or a demo booking. Lead generation is the system that attracts those people and captures their details so your team can follow up.
It matters most for businesses that do not sell instantly online: education, real estate, healthcare, B2B services, manufacturing, finance and high-value products.
The parts of a lead generation system
1. An offer worth responding to
People need a reason to get in touch: a free demo class, a quote, a consultation, a site visit, a sample or a useful guide. A vague “contact us” converts far less than a specific offer.
2. Traffic
Visitors arrive through Google Ads, Meta Ads, SEO, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, referrals and content.
3. A landing page
A focused page about one offer, with a clear headline, the key benefits, proof such as photos or genuine testimonials, answers to common doubts and a short form or call button.
4. Capture
Forms, click-to-call, WhatsApp and lead form ads on Meta and LinkedIn. Ask only for the details you really need; every extra field reduces responses.
5. Tracking
Record where each lead came from, so you can calculate the cost per lead for every channel and campaign.
6. Follow-up
The fastest response usually wins. Leads go cold quickly, so reply within minutes or hours, not days, and use a simple CRM or even a well-kept spreadsheet to track every lead to a result.
Quality matters more than quantity
A cheap lead that never answers the phone is expensive. Measure:
- how many leads were contactable;
- how many were genuinely interested;
- how many became customers;
- the cost per customer, not just the cost per lead.
Share these results back with whoever runs the ads, so campaigns can be tuned towards the leads that actually buy.
Ways to improve lead quality
- Be clear about price ranges, location or eligibility on the landing page.
- Add one qualifying question to the form, such as budget or timeline.
- Exclude irrelevant searches with negative keywords.
- Use higher-intent offers, such as a quote request rather than a free download, when sales capacity is limited.
Respect and consent
Only contact people who asked to hear from you, explain how their details will be used, and make it easy to opt out. Pressure tactics damage reputation quickly, especially in reviews.
