What is affiliate marketing? How it works and how to start honestly

Affiliate marketing is a partnership in which you recommend another company’s product and earn a commission when someone buys through your unique link. The company gets a sale it might not have made, the buyer gets a useful recommendation, and you get paid for connecting them.

How it works

  1. You join an affiliate programme, either directly with a brand or through an affiliate network or marketplace programme.
  2. You receive tracking links for products.
  3. You share those links in helpful content: reviews, comparisons, tutorials, videos or newsletters.
  4. When a visitor clicks and buys within the tracking period, the sale is credited to you.
  5. You are paid a commission, usually a percentage of the sale or a fixed amount per action.

Where affiliates publish

  • Blogs and content sites: reviews, “best of” comparisons and how-to guides that attract search traffic.
  • YouTube: unboxings, tutorials and honest reviews.
  • Instagram and other social platforms: recommendations to an engaged audience.
  • Email newsletters: curated picks for subscribers who trust you.

Choosing a niche

Pick a topic you understand or can learn properly, where people buy products and need advice: cameras, software, home appliances, fitness equipment, courses and so on. A narrow niche, such as “budget gear for home video creators”, is easier to stand out in than “technology”.

What makes affiliate content work

  • Genuine usefulness: real testing, photos, pros and cons, and who each product is not right for.
  • Search intent: answering the exact questions buyers ask before purchasing.
  • Trust: recommending fewer, better products instead of everything that pays.
  • Patience: content and audience take months to build.

Thin pages that only copy product descriptions rarely rank or convert, and Google’s guidance specifically asks review content to show first-hand expertise.

Disclosure and honesty

Always tell readers when a link earns you a commission. Advertising guidelines in India, including those from ASCI for influencers, expect clear disclosure, and so do most affiliate programmes. Disclosure also builds trust: readers who feel tricked do not come back.

Realistic expectations

Affiliate marketing is a genuine business model, but it is not quick or guaranteed money. Earnings depend on traffic, trust, the products and commission rates, which programmes can change. Treat it as building a small media business, not a shortcut.
