How to choose a domain name for your business

Your domain name is your address on the internet. It appears on your website, email addresses, business cards and ads, so it is worth choosing carefully. A good domain is easy to remember, easy to spell and lasts as your business grows.

Tips for a good domain

  • Keep it short and simple to type on a phone.
  • Make it easy to say. If you have to spell it out every time, it is too complicated.
  • Avoid hyphens and numbers, which are easily forgotten or mistyped.
  • Use your brand name where possible. Brand names are more memorable and flexible than long keyword phrases.
  • Think long term. A name tied to one product or city may not fit if you expand.
  • Say it out loud and write it in lowercase to check it does not form unintended words.

Do keywords in the domain help SEO?

Only slightly, if at all. Exact-match domains such as “best-seo-course-delhi.com” do not get special treatment, and they can look less trustworthy. A distinctive brand name, backed by good content, is usually the better choice.

Which extension?

  • .com: the most recognised worldwide; a safe default if available.
  • .in: India’s country domain, a good choice for businesses focused on Indian customers. Country domains also help Google understand your target country.
  • .co.in, .org, .net and newer extensions: can work, but are less familiar to many users.

If you can, register both the .com and .in versions of your name and redirect one to the other.

Before you register

  1. Check that the name is not a trademark of another business.
  2. Check social media handles for the same name.
  3. Look up the domain’s history if it was previously registered; old spam or penalties can linger.

Registering and protecting it

  • Use a reputable registrar.
  • Register the domain in your own or your company’s name and email, not a developer’s or agency’s.
  • Turn on auto-renewal and keep payment details current; losing a domain through an expired card is painful.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on the registrar account.
  • Use privacy protection where available.
