What is WordPress? Building a website without coding

WordPress is free, open-source software for building and managing websites. It began as a blogging tool and now powers a very large share of all websites, from personal blogs to company sites, online stores and news publications. Its popularity comes from one thing above all: you can build and edit a professional site without writing code.

WordPress.org vs WordPress.com

  • WordPress.org is the free software you install on your own hosting. You control everything: themes, plugins, design and data. You are also responsible for updates, backups and security.
  • WordPress.com is a hosted service that runs WordPress for you, with free and paid plans. It is simpler to start, but some features depend on the plan.

Most businesses and freelancers use self-hosted WordPress (WordPress.org) for full control.

The key building blocks

Pages and posts

Pages are for lasting content such as Home, About, Services and Contact. Posts are dated articles that appear in your blog.

The block editor

Content is built from blocks: paragraphs, headings, images, buttons, columns, galleries and more. Patterns are ready-made groups of blocks you can insert and edit.

Themes

A theme controls the design and layout. Choose a lightweight, regularly updated theme from a trusted source.

Plugins

Plugins add features: contact forms, SEO settings, security, backups, caching and online stores (WooCommerce). Install only what you need, because every plugin adds code to maintain.

Building a site step by step

  1. Register a domain name and choose reliable hosting.
  2. Install WordPress, often in one click from the hosting dashboard.
  3. Enable HTTPS with an SSL certificate.
  4. Choose and set up a theme, logo and colours.
  5. Create the core pages and a clear menu.
  6. Add a contact form and test that messages arrive.
  7. Set permalinks to readable URLs and configure basic SEO.
  8. Set up backups and security updates before launch.

Keeping a WordPress site healthy

  • Update WordPress, themes and plugins regularly; most hacks exploit outdated software.
  • Back up files and the database automatically, and keep a copy off the server.
  • Use strong passwords and two-factor authentication for admin accounts.
  • Remove unused plugins and themes.
  • Check speed with PageSpeed Insights and optimise large images.

Is WordPress good for SEO?

WordPress gives you everything you need for good SEO: editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, sitemaps and fast, well-structured themes. But the platform alone does not rank a site. Content, structure and technical care still decide the results.
