How to start keyword research for a small website

Keyword research is the habit of finding out how your customers describe what you offer.

A simple starting process

  1. List your offers. Write each product or service in plain words.
  2. Ask real people. Note the phrases customers use in emails, calls and reviews.
  3. Check the results. Search your phrases and look at what kind of pages appear. If the results are guides and you only have a sales page, the intent may not match.
  4. Group by topic. Map each group of phrases to one page.

Keyword tools give estimates, not exact figures, so treat their numbers as a guide and rely on judgement.
